What is Manga?

For those who have not come across the word, manga are graphic novels. Americans call them comics. The difference in Japan (Nippon) is that manga are much thicker and stories told in much more of a novel style. Manga is the most common and most read form of publication in Japan.

Of cultural note in Japan, manga are read from top to bottom, right side to left starting from what would be for us Americans the back of the book. Some publishers have done a great job of publishing these manga in the same style in America preserving the style and feel of the original.

Oh My Goddess! Series is by far my favorite series. Also known as Ah Megami Sama! it is a wonderfully written story created by Kosuke Fujishima.

New college student Keiichi Morisato accidentially dials the Goddess Helpline while trying to order food in his dorm. His call is answered by Belldandy and she personally appears through a mirror to consult with him and grant him one wish…. Keiichi thinking this is a major joke put on by his senior dorm mates, says “ok, there’s no way a cute girl like this could grant me a wish… so… . Belldandy I want you to stay with me and be my girlfriend!” With a flash of light from the heavens, the wish is granted and the fun begins.

Endless possibilities exist in this manga series and Fujishima-san’s genius.

Don’t Touch That Wand!

Ten year-old prodigy Negi Springfield has just graduated from magic academy. He dreams of becoming a master wizard. Instead he’s sent to Japan as part of his continued training to teach English….At an all-girls school! (sounds like a dream job doesn’t it?) All the students are delighted with their cute new teacher- except for Asuna, who resents Negi for replacing the teacher she secretly has a crush on (girls can be really scary!)

Although forbidden to display his magical powers, sometimes Negi cant resist helping out. And when Asuna discovers Negi’s secret she vows to make his life as difficult as possible-just the thing to prepare Negi for the challenges of life as a Master Magus…… Let the chaos begin!

Very creative writing with a main character who has an alter-ego. In one form he is known as Lapis, the other Lazuli….

In the era of warring states, warlords become kings, dynasties crumble and heroes rise from the most unlikely places. Rey Yan and his sister Shao Lin are orphans, raised by a wise master in the ways of magic and combat. While war escalated around them, they managed to stay free of its politics and allegiances- that is until they met Jaryoon, King of Hahyun. This pacifist king is the target of assassins both mortal and inhuman, and when demons attack, he’ll need the power of Rey and his PaSa sword in order to stay alive. The last thing Rey wants to do is save the life of a politician, but the the chance to slay demons to feed his cursed sword is just too great to pass up. Can these strangers with nothing in common become allies in order to stop a pact between demons and save the country?
